Moveable Feasts is an organization that centers around bringing hot, nutritious meals to people living in the Lexington community that suffer from HIV/AIDS. The organization was started in 1998 by Michael Thompson and Carol Farmer, both of whom were previously invested in HIV/AIDS awareness. Williams got the motivation to start Moveable Feats when Charles Williams, who had been living with HIV, died from starvation not too far from the city hall.
Since the start of the organization Moveable Feasts has delivered 437,579 meals. The thing that I find most striking and inspiring about the organization is that they not only deliver meals to people whom society seems to ignore, but they go the extra mile by taking the time and resources to make sure that the meals are nutritionally balanced. Every meal contains a serving of protein, fruit, and vegetable. Moveable Feasts feels that this is a very important aspect of their mission because they are trying to make sure that their clients stay out of the hospital and one of the best ways to do that is my providing them with a well balanced meal.
After personally visiting and training to be a driver for the organization my respect for it and it's many volunteers has only grown. The neighborhoods that the meals are delivered to are ones that people normally try to avoid, but the drivers are not letting that stop them from getting out there and showing love to the Lexington area. The driver that I trained with, who has been there since 2006, said that he can only recall two times when meals were not delivered. Rain, snow, or shine you will see Moveable Feats volunteers making their rounds. My favorite part of the experience so far has been the look of pure gratitude on the people's faces when they receive their meal. I can't wait to continue on this journey and do my part in showing love to members of the Lexington community who need it the most.
