Moveable Feast was founded in Lexington, Kentucky in 1998. The idea for the organization surfaced after the unnecessary death of an artist, Charles
Williams. Williams had AIDS but did not die from the virus; he died of
starvation in his home. Michael Thompson (who also had AIDS) and Carol Farmer decided to try to make a difference in Lexington, which has the second highest rate of people with AIDS/HIV in Kentucky according to their website (feastlex.org). The service began just using leftover
food donated by local restaurants to feed people they knew that had a similar
need to Williams, but eventually they expanded into their own commercial sized kitchen where they prepare meals for over 100 people in need every single day of the week completely free of charge.
Moveable Feast not only prepares and delivers meals, they also offer in-home AIDS/HIV testing. Testing for the virus is crucial to help control the spreading of it. According to the Moveable Feast website, 20% of people positive for it do not know, and the people who do not know they are infected are responsible for nearly 70% of new cases each year.
Although the main focus of the program is making sure that the people in need are delivered meals every day, the interaction the clients get with the volunteers is almost, if not just as important. For some of the clients, the volunteers may be the only people they ever get to see or talk to. It helps keep them mentally and emotionally healthy to have that interaction each day. It also allows the volunteers to monitor the health of the clients and make sure they do not need more help.
The organization relies almost entirely on volunteers to make the meal preparation and delivery possible each day. All of the money they use to pay for food and other expenses comes from donations, fundraisers, and public grants, which means publicity is a huge part of making a small organization like this successful. Moveable Feast has a Facebook page where they post about upcoming fundraisers to increase awareness and participation (https://www.facebook.com/MoveableFeastLexington/timeline).
