Last Friday, I had the opportunity to be trained to be a driver for the organization Moveable Feast. It was a very eye-opening experience. Moveable Feast is a charity that prepares and delivers meals Monday-Friday to HIV/AIDS victims or Hospice patients free of charge, rain or shine. Michael Thompson started it back in 1998 when an artist living with AIDS starved to death just a few blocks from City Hall. Since then Moveable Feast has Delivered over 400,000 meals to those in need. I think what I like most about this organization is how easy they make it for people to get help. As Board Member Robert Morgan explains, "...if you call up and say I need food, you will have a delivery that night. Before they've even met you or know anything about you, they will make sure you have a meal that night..." That makes them really unique because at some other charities it is a hassle to to receive the services they offer, whereas Moveable Feast helps everyone they can, you just need to give them your address.
During my orientation at Moveable Feast I rode around the inner-city of Lexington delivering meals. Some houses would simply receive dinner, others would get dinner and a grocery bag, and still others would receive dinner, grocery bag, and lunch for the next day.The meals are very nutritious and balanced. That night the menu was chicken and mashed potatoes, along with a dessert on the side. The living conditions of the people we were delivering food to made quite an impression on me. The neighborhoods were really run down and the houses were really tiny. The driver told us that one of the apartment complexes he used to deliver to was shut down because of too many code violations. It made me realize how blessed I was, I mean my dorm is nicer than most of the places we delivered to. Another thing that struck me was how common AIDS is, I thought
that was just a problem in Africa. I am so glad there are people like the ones at Moveable Feast, without them, these people would be starving. I look forward to working with this organization more and more in the future.

  1. This sounds like such an amazing organization! I really like how you explain the organization, but you don't just state facts. You give the organization such a human touch.

  2. This organization seems like it will be very rewarding. Make the most of your time volunteering there. You did a good job describing what you seen and your first experience.
