Farewell to Moveable Feast

It is so crazy to think that the semester has already almost come to a close. These four months have come and gone faster than Christmas day itself. Of all the things that I devoted my time to, I would have to say that without a doubt Moveable Feast is one of the things that has had the greatest impact on me. As stated in previous posts, Moveable Feast was not my first choice of service learning sites. However, my perspective of the organization changed a little more each time I volunteered. Every time I walked through the door to pick up the meals for my run I was welcomed with smiling faces of the hard working volunteers that had just spent hours preparing the meals (example of a typical meal pictured below). Another thing that aided in my shift in perspective of moveable feast was the kind and grateful people that I met every time I delivered a meal.

The first two times that I volunteered I met a recipient of the meals that really brightened my day and this final route was no different. About half way through the route we arrived at an apartment complex that I later found out was state funded housing. It was raining so as I rang the doorbell I was huddled under the tiny overhang and patiently waited for the meal recipient to open the door. When the door finally opened I was unexpectedly greeted with a hand shake. The man then proceeded to take the food with a grateful smile. Instead of turning around and and shutting the door the man struck up a conversation. After about 3 minutes I knew enough about the man to realize that he had lived a hard life and seen things that no one should ever have to. The thing that got me about him was that from his mannerism and purely joyful attitude you would never know the hardship that he had faced.

As I thought about it more I realized that this was the way that almost everyone I had met through this organization is. Many have been through, and are currently in unthinkable situations. However, every day they answer the door with a friendly smile and an overwhelming sense of thankfulness, not only for food but also for life in general. If I had to pick an overall take away from my whole time at Moveable Feast I would definitely say that it has taught me to value life and live it to the fullest.

Thanks for joining me on this journey with Moveable Feast. Don't hesitate to leave any comments below if you have any questions!
