| How I thought my voulnteering experince would be. |
At the beginning of my first time
volunteering at Moveable Feast, I thought that my volunteering experience would
merely just be food delivery. However, this volunteering experience is way much
more than that. I was able to get a free tour of Lexington and actually see the
impact of this service on the inhabitants of this city I now call home.
This
was really my first time experiencing Lexington beyond the campus setting.
Shelley and I were fortunate enough for our orientation to get paired with a
man who had a vast knowledge of Lexington. While delivering the meals, we were
able to practically get a history lesson on the city of Lexington. Every street
we traveled on and every store we passed had a different, interesting story.
Our trainer was an amazing storyteller but it was really just the stories and
history of this place that make it so captivating and unique. This city is so
rich in history and it’s like you can see the stories on display in every nook
and cranny of the city. After our orientation, I had such a great appreciation
and understanding of our city.
The
best part of this first experience with moveable feast was seeing how much the
organization really helped the citizens of Lexington. The people who receive these
meals definitely need them. Seeing the living conditions of these people really
reminded me of my family and friends back in Chicago. I was really touched to
see the needs of these people are met. I couldn’t help but think that so many
lives could be saved and enhanced if there were organizations like this across
my this whole nation. For some people these meals are the only source of food
and nutrition they receive. I was baffled how the people would sitting and
waiting for their meals. I’ve dedicated my life to helping people like these
and it was really inspiring to see how much Moveable Feast impacts the lives of
these people. I was so emotional during this experience because for me it was
so burdening and inspiring all at the same time. On the inside I was on the
verge of tears but on the outside I was calm, cool, and collected.
When I got
back to my room I cried for about 15 minutes. All I could think about was how
much these people needed help and how Moveable Feast was providing that very
help they needed.

| How I felt on the inside while delivering the meals. |
As I reflect back on this, I feel so grateful to be able to
volunteer for an amazing organization like Moveable Feast. They’ve given so
much inspiration to educate others about their health and provide solutions to
help them. I can’t wait to impact people the way Moveable Feast does. That's all for now until next time!

I really enjoyed your blog! I feel the same way working with the people at my volunteer site. What do you plan to do as you continue your education as UK, and beyond, to continue helping others like you do with Moveable Feast?
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like this organization is really doing an incredible thing by helping all these people. Are there any other organizations that you think you might want to volunteer for also?
ReplyDeleteIt never ceases to amaze me at how good you are with your words, and how you make your readers actually visualize what you're describing! However, when you said "Seeing the living conditions of these people really reminded me of my family and friends back in Chicago." I was instantly curious. Can you explain what conditions your friends and family endured back in Chicago?
ReplyDeleteIf you could choose one lesson for everyone to learn from an organization like Moveable Feasts, what would it be?
