Preparing to Dine with Moveable Feast

Throughout my childhood I've been given opportunities to volunteer for various organizations. For example, 3 out the 4 years I was in high school I was able to volunteer during the summer for the Red Cross. Also, in elementary and middle school I volunteered with my school in conjunction with American Heart Association. With that said, I have always loved volunteering and helping others. So, I was very ecstatic when I found out that I could continue to do the same in college and do it for a class that I could share the experience in.

This time around I get to volunteer with an organization called Moveable Feast. Moveable Feast is an organization that prepares and delivers fresh meals five days a week to HIV/AIDS related illnesses. The best thing is that these meals are completely free of charge for the recipients. Moveable Feast has been operating in Lexington since October 3, 1998. Since then they have been able to provide over 200,000 dinners, about 50,000 lunches and more than 50,000 bags of groceries.

Before this volunteer opportunity I had no idea about this organization but I’m so that I get to contribute to the effort. Once I found out what the organization actually I did there was no doubt in my mind that this was where I wanted to volunteer. I was ecstatic when I found out that the organization primarily targets HIV/AIDS afflicted people. My family on both sides has struggled with this epidemic and along the way some family members have passed away. With that said, I have grown up very curious about HIV and AIDS. I have done research and tried to educate my family and friends about this epidemic. I guess you could say I’m a mini-activist for my family and friends. So, I am more than eager to begin volunteering at Moveable Feast.

I believe volunteering at Moveable feast will be an amazing experience and I can’t wait for it to start. I’m excited to help my community and those in it. I intend to meet different people, make connections and make an impact. I know how it was for my family members going through this time in their life and I can’t wait to be the ray of sunshine that brightens someone’s day. That’s all for now until next time.

  1. I wasn't very familiar with Moveable Feast prior to exploring this blog, so I really liked how well you explained the organization's mission and overall goal. I also thought it was nice that you included personal details that are relevant to why you chose Moveable Feast. I now have a better understanding of not only what Moveable Feast is, but why you chose to volunteer at this service organization. I hope the remainder of your volunteer experience goes well!

  3. I was not interested in Moveable Feast until I read your blog post. AJ, you have such a way with words! I am excited for you to be able to carry out this mini-activism through this institution.
I empathize with you, and my heart breaks for you and your family. I am so sorry that you have had to go through the terrible consequences of those wretched diseases. I believe what you are doing with this organization is going to make a huge impact on other people's lives, and you will be able to powerfully and directly take a bite out of this epidemic. God bless you on this journey, and I hope you have as much fun and take as much as you can out of this experience!
